The 4th generation HIACE H100 - Aug.1989 - Jun.2004
Aug. 1989 Full model change implemented and 4th generation HIACE H100 unveiled.In the square body for unique body size category '5-number' in Japan, spacious room was realized. In the late part of model life, model lineup was implemented beyond the category by development of engine displacement and other modification. It gained popularity by easy maneuverability because it has the cab over type cabin, which locates ahead of front axle.
Since the debut in 1989, minor change or modification was done in 1993, 1996 and 1999, but the combination of powertrain 3L turbo + 4AT only was available from 1999. The drivetrain was FR and 4WD. The number of grade was decreased to 7, 8 and 10-passenser models.
The model had full model change, and floor shift was applied to the entire lineup. The stick-type parking brake under dashboard was replaced with lever type with lock release button on the floor between the front seats. The engine lineup was reviewed, and 2L 3Ypetrol engine was replaced with new 1RZ-E (1RZ for van and commuter). Also, 2.4L 2RZ-E petrol engine was added. The petrol engine version for 4WD model was cancelled and only 2.8L 3L diesel engine was available. Besides, fuel filler opening was relocated from right to left.
2L-T engine was modified and 2L-TE with electric-controlled spill valve was mounted. Also, white pearl mica, the special body color was available for Super Custom Limited and 4WD was added to the grade. On the other hand, SW (Switch Wagon) with van interior was added (only available for diesel 2WD MT model) for customers who were reluctant to take a vehicle inspection every year in Japan. Besides, optional wireless door lock was added for improvement of utility.
The high standard ambulance Toyota HIMEDIC, based on HIACE was launched. The engine was V-8 1UZ-FE for first model of luxurious car Cersior (LEXUS LS) which was unique for HIACE lineup. At the same time, wagon was modified and seat belt in the rear seat was replaced with 3-point type. Also, high-mount stop lamp was applied to strengthen the safety feature. On the other hand, new grade Living Saloon EX was added.
The model had the minor change such as facelift and remodeling the design of rear combination lamp and garnish. By this modification, the front fascia of wagon DX was replaced from one for van and commuter to one for wagon. At the same time, the headlamp was changed from shield beam to bulb-replaceable H4 halogen lamp. The part time 4WD system, which was converted from Hi-Lux pick-up, was replaced with full time system without center differential lock. Also, Manual free front hub was changed into direct connection type. Bothering shift lever operation was improved, but the rough road travel performance decreased a little. Regarding 2L petrol engine for van and commuter, the engine was replaced from 1RZ with carburetor to 1RZ-E with EFI, which was same as one for wagon. Also, 2.4L 2L-TE diesel engine, which had been bothered by insufficient torque and frequent troubles, was changed to 3L 1KZ-TE diesel turbo engine with aluminum cylinder head. For the wagon, 2WD had 2L-TE engine, and low rotation torque-required 4WD had 2.8L 3L engine, but the engine was unified to 1KZ-TE then. The diesel engine for van and commuter was also unified to 3L engine. New engines conformed to emission control at that time. Heat reflection glass for Wagon SW and Super Custom Limited was cancelled. On the other hand, suspension for wagon horizontal G-sensing TEMS was applied and coolant of air conditioner was alternative chlorofluorocarbon gas.
Partial modification was implemented and Super Custom Limited included 10-speaker audio and Super Custom included the electric retractable door mirror.
The wagon had the minor change, and facelift was implemented and air bag in driver's seat and passenger seat as well as ABS were added. The grade lineup was reviewed and Super Custom G with automatic air conditioner and other equipment was added and 9-passenger Custom was cancelled. Regarding the van, maximum payload of all the cars was increased to 1250kg, and gasoline car was conformed to the emission control then (commuter, too). Van GL was set as DX 'GL' package instead of the grade, and tachometer was added to Super GL.
Minor change was implemented mainly for van models such as design change of front grill and one piece front bumper with apron in the lower part of bumper. The gasoline car was conformed to the idling regulation in that year. Also, engine for diesel models was modified to 3L 5L engine to comply with long term regulation in 1997. On the other hand, seat textile for Super GL van was changed and air bag and ABS were included in the driver's seat. Besides, gasoline 2WD car (AT only) was added (air bags in driver's and passenger's seat and ABS were set as option). Concentrated door lock was possible from passenger's seat except DX.
The wagon had the minor change. As for the appearance, front section gets a little longer and HIACE emblem in front of vehicle was revived first time in 6 years. Regarding the interior, instrument panel was changed and optitranmeter and accessory outlet were added, while MT model was cancelled from the lineup in Japan. Environmental performance was improved, and the gasoline car conformed to the idling regulation and diesel car was confirmed to the emission control in 1998. On the other hand, REGIUS ACE, derived model of van, wad added.
CD player was added to gasoline van models and 2.4L 2RZ-E petrol engine was added to Super Long and commuter models.
The van had the minor change, and parts for wagon was converted to steering wheel for Super GL, and Super GL-E, whose equipment was simplified a little, was added. 5-door model was set to this grade. 2RZ-E engine was mounted to Super GL-E Super Long.
Partial modification was implemented, and petrol engine for van and commuter was changed to new 1TR-FE engine. The model was conformed to emission control in 2001 and cleared the latest emission control at that time. The sales were restarted and diesel engine only was available for wagon.
