It is a large SUV from Toyota.
The designing was lead by Hino Motors, and the development and manufacturing are co-operated by Hino and Toyota.
It is exported as "4Runner" to North America, and it was sold in Japan until August 2009.
As the name suggests, it was based on the Hilux of that time, but the final model was in the group of Tacoma, which was the successor of Hilux. It shares the basic part of the frame as well as the subordinate, including the suspension, engine, and the drive train with Tacoma, FJ Cruiser, and Land Cruiser Prado.
The name "Hilux" is a coined word from the English words "Hi (high class, superior)" and "Luxury," and "Surf" means "ripples" in English, indicating the widened use.
