After all, Japan is renowned for manufacturing reliable vehicles that can last for a long time. What’s more, automakers from this country are known for using high-end technology coupled with quality workmanship.

Some opt to buy used Toyota HiAce van in Congo, but you can only have more freedom to choose when you opt to import directly from Japan. After all, thousands of vehicles still in good condition flood the auctions every week. With Japanese used cars, you can truly enjoy quality and cost-efficiency.

Of course, you have to conduct some research about the import rules and regulations in Congo before you make a purchase. After all, the government has placed stringent requirements that importers must meet before they can get their car from Japan. You must also learn how to compute the import taxes, fees, and duties so you won’t be unpleasantly surprised along the way.

What are the Used Vehicle Import Taxes and Duties in Congo?

At Carused.jp, we have a built-in tool that saves you the time, effort, and brain cells you need in computing car import fees. On the other hand, we do understand that there are people who would like to know how the car import taxes are computed. So, we’ve put together all the fees and requirements you need to learn when you are shipping a used Japanese car to Congo.

Some Terms to Remember:

  • FOB (Free on Board) – This is the actual price of the vehicle, minus the fees for insurance, inspection, and transport.
  • CIF (Cost of Insurance Freight) – This is the sum of the FOB, insurance, freight, and inspection fees.

It is worth noting that the fees for importing cars significantly vary. Moreover, they depend on the type of vehicle you are planning to ship to Congo. Expect the value-added tax (VAT) to range between 8 to 13%. Meanwhile, the import duties range from 8 to 46%, computed according to your engine’s size. You also have to know that importing used vehicles, trailers, tractors, and semi-trailers over 15 years old are subject to a 12% excise tax.

Before your vehicle can be released from the port, you must pay port clearing agent fees. When it comes to determining the VAT, Congo follows the tariff fees laid out by the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

You must also consider that aside from consumption and excise duties, imported used Japanese vehicles are also subject to various para-fiscal levies. Here are the applicable fees:

  • Administrative payment – 2% of the CIF value
  • Congolese Control Office (OCC) payments – 1.5% of the CIF value along with other administrative fees
  • Office de Gestion du Fret Maritime (OGEFREM) payment — 0.58% of the CIF value
  • Funds for the Promotion of Industry (FPI) charge – 2% of the CIF value
  • Inspection fees from the Bureau of Inspection, Valuation, Assessment, and Control (BIVAC) – 1.5% of the free on board (FOB) value

You can choose from three primary ports for importing in Congo:

  • Mombasa Port (Kenya) – Expect the cheapest freight fees when you opt for this destination.
  • Port of Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania) – While this shipping point offers moderately priced freight fees, you’d have to pay for the extra cost of ferrying the vehicle using a road carrier to Congo.
  • Matadi Port (Congo) – Since they also include the fees for container shipment, this port offers the highest freight fees.
