Car Import Regulations in the Philippines

Every country has a set of rules and regulations in car importation and the Philippines is no exception. If you plan to import used cars in the Philippines, it is always best that you follow the guidelines set by your country so you won’t encounter problems with your pre-purchased vehicle. This way, you can make informed decisions as you pick among the car options available on our site.

To keep you guided, below are important rules that you should follow as you import used cars in the Philippines:

Age Restriction

In the Philippines, there is no age restriction on imported used cars. However, only used vehicles that were registered 6 months or more prior to shipment are allowed to be imported to the Philippines.

Car Import Taxation and Charges in the Philippines

  • Customs Duty: 40%
  • Value Added Tax (VAT): 12%
  • Ad Valorem Tax: 15% to 100% (Highly dependent on the displacement of the car engine; vehicles with bigger engines are subject to higher taxes.)
  • NOTE: Not all Filipinos can import used cars in the Philippines. Also, only 1 car per family is allowed for importation. As a guide, below are the special cases that qualifies you for used car importation:
  • Returning Filipino citizen who resided outside the country for more than a year
  • A Filipino citizen with a direct family member who holds an immigrant or a 13G visa for more than a year
  • An immigrant or a 13G visa holder for more than a year

Car Inspection in the Philippines

  • Only left-hand drive vehicles are qualified for importation in the Philippines.
  • Gasoline-fueled vehicles: Limited to 1,500 kilograms and 2,800 cc
  • Upon inspection, the vehicle must pass the safety and emission standards set by the Philippine government.
  • Import Authority Permit must be secured from the Philippine Bureau of Import Service prior to importation.
  • Vehicle must arrive at the port within 60 days of the car owner’s arrival.
  • 3-year old vehicles should be registered on immigrant’s name for at least 6 months prior to the application of Import Authority Permit.
  • Vehicles over 3 years should be registered on immigrant’s name for at least 12 months prior to the application of Import Authority Permit.

  • Proof of ownership/original registration
  • Import Authority Permit released by the Philippine Bureau of Import Service
  • Certificate of arrival
  • Bill of sale (original copy)
  • Surety bond
  • Passport (original copy)
  • Engine number/stencils of chassis
  • Commercial invoice or deed of sale
  • Other documents required depending on immigrant’s status
