It has been produced from 2002 to 2011.
Full model change and seventh generation of Canter whose concept is 'GLOBAL FIT', also called 'Generation Canter', was released. 2WD model was launched in June, and 4WD model was marketed in July. LPG and CNG model were added in November. The design of head lamp was changed to large sized slant eye shape and instrument panel shift lever is introduced to the cab over truck (including small, middle and large trucks) for the first time in the world.
Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation was spun off from the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and inaugurated.
Aishin 6-speed AT, same transmission as Toyota Dyna etc. was introduced to the model for North America.
Minor changes and coped with the regulation of rush prevention system in the rear section, position of lamp installation, and luminous intensity distribution. In addition, INOMAT- II, 5-speed mechanical AT was introduced to some models.
Canter Eco Hybrid', with parallel diesel hybrid system was released. Ahead of competitors, lithium ion battery made by Hitachi Automotive Systems was introduced. Different from HIMR system of Hino (Toyota), it has a clutch between engine and motor and it can start only by motor with better generation rate. Ahead of competitors, lithium ion battery made by Hitachi Automotive Systems was introduced. The 3L engine 4M 42 with common rail direct injection diesel turbo was mounted and transmission INOMAT-II with Aisin 5-speed MT and Bosch transmission unit was combined with the engine. Compared to the 4.8L model, it realized the reduction of NOx by 41%, PM by 46%, and the mileage was improved by 14%.
The model for new long-term regulation was added. The environmental performance as well as the design of front fascia was reviewed. Chrome-plate Mitsubishi logo, The Three Diamonds, was applied to the front drill. The Canter logo, which has been popular among truck drivers for a long time, was replaced with Fuso logo on the front grill. On the other hand, CANTER logo sticker was applied to the left and right door. There was also a model with MITSUBISHI FUSO front grill logo in the EU market.
The model with 4M42 (T3) diesel engine to cope with 2015 fuel efficiency standards for heavy vehicle in Japan was added. On the other hand, the model Canter Guts and petrol engine Guts were discontinued.
Minor changes and theft-prevention immobilizer was applied to all models. The engine output and fuel economy of Eco hybrid system were improved. Also, the model line-up was expanded plus models for new license system and extended length were introduced. Sales of Canter Guts restarted.
The model setting for 2015 fuel efficiency standards for heavy vehicle was expanded and the model over GVW 5t (concerning license for middle size truck in Japan) was introduced.
Minor changes only for Eco Hybrid version which realized best fuel economy of 2t truck segment in Japan by optimized hybrid control program. Besides, fuel economy for 3t model was enhanced too. C02 emission for these models was decreased drastically.
Sales of Eco Hybrid Canter have been stopped.
