RoRo vs. Container Shipping: Which is Better for Importing Used Cars?

Last Updated on 6月 19, 2021 by Carusedjp

Importing a used JDM car to your country can save you tons of money. However, it also has its unique set of problems and challenges. For one, you need to think of ways to keep the expenses for shipping as low as possible. So, choosing the ideal method for importing your car is a crucial part of the process. There are two primary options you can choose for shipping the vehicle you bought from our Japan used car auction:

  • Roll-On-Roll-Off (RoRo) Service
  • Container Shipping Service

Whether you’re planning to ship a HiAce van, a Toyota Dyna, or a Mitsubishi Fuso Fighter, you need to weight the pros and cons of each delivery method. This way, you will be able to choose the ideal option for your budget and needs.

Shipping Option 1: RoRo Service

RoRo service is mainly used for transporting various types of vehicles and heavy pieces of machinery, including agricultural utilities, buses, SUVs, yachts, trailer homes, cars, cranes, and trailer homes, among many others. Many prefer the RoRo transportation option because it is the simpler and more cost-effective option.

When shipping via RoRo service, the vehicles are towed or driven directy on the ship at the port of loading. In a way, the watertight vessel acts like a huge car park filled with cars. It is worth noting that you need to pay export warehouses when choosing RoRo service as your transportation method. You need to pay for the container packing, flat rack loading, crating, and port delivery fees.

When you are importing a lone HiAce van or any single car, RoRo is the cost-effective option for you. Your vehicle will be transported directly at your chosen port of delivery. On the other hand, if you’re planning to import multiple vehicles, you must expect to make several trips just to offload the cars. It is true that you can book a trailer to transport your car, but you need to be prepared to pay for additional expenses.

Shipping Option 2: Container Shipping

When you want a more secure way to import your JDM car, container shipping is the ideal option for you. This method also covers more global routes compared to RoRo service. It is perfect for shipping a luxury car because the placing the vehicle inside a container ensures that it will arrive at your location without damages.

If you choose container shipping for your HiAce van or any used vehicle, your car will be placed inside a container. It will be secured with ratchet, nylon, or chocks straps, preventing it from moving during transit. Wooden braces will also be placed around every tire of the car. The timber will be nailed to the floor to further secure the vehicle.

No matter where you plan to import your used Japanese vehicle, you can ensure that your car will be transported safely to your chosen port of delivery. Container shipping companies need to follow stringent regulations. They have to make sure that their containers are watertight, structurally sound, and impenetrable by the elements.

Which is the Best Shipping Method?

Your decision will primarily depend on your budget. Keep in mind that the shipping costs are influenced by various factors, including the origin and destination of the vehicle. So, the transportation method alone does not determine the shipping fees.

As we’ve mentioned, container shipping is the ideal option if you want to ensure maximum protection for your luxury vehicle. However, you should know that it lies at the higher end of the spectrum. So, be prepared to spend more with this shipping method. On the other hand, if you need a cost-effective solution for importing your used car, choosing a RoRo service will suffice.
