Last Updated on 4月 2, 2018 by Carusedjp

Whether you’re planning to buy a Japanese used car or a brand new vehicle, you will with a machine that contains about 30,000 parts (if you count every component down to the smallest screws). It can be quite difficult to identify which one is the “most important.” On the other hand, there are some primary parts you should always inspect to ensure that your driving experience is safe, comfortable and smooth.

In this article, we’ve listed down five essential car parts that you should regularly review. The next time you check out a vehicle from a Japan car auction, make sure you verify the condition of the parts we will mention below. In this way, you can get an idea of how much maintenance or repairs you would have to deal with.

engine

1. Engine

Every vehicle is powered by an engine and most cars use a gasoline-fuelled, internal combustion engine. Engines are often identified depending on the number of cylinders they have, and every cylinder has its own combustion chamber. This means that the size of the engine is a major factor that affects the overall power of a car.
Other factors like the type of the transmission and the combustion timing, determine the capability of a vehicle. It also goes without saying that the engine can be considered as the heart of your car and it requires regular check-up.

brakes

2. Brakes

In terms of safety, your braking system can be considered as one of the most important parts of your car. Typically, you have to consult a professional mechanic to know if you need to replace the brake pads or rotors. However, there are warning signs that clearly tell you that it is time to bring your vehicle to a car repair shop. You would hear or feel the following when you apply the brakes:

  • Grinding and/or screeching sound
  • Vibration
  • Poor responsiveness
  • The car “pulls” to one side
tires

3. Tires

Without tires, you wouldn’t need your brakes. Since your tires are literally the part of your vehicle that touches the road, it is important to keep them in good shape. You can ensure safe drives when you keep your tires are properly inflated and aligned by professionals.
If the depth of your tires’ tread is below 4/32 of an inch, it is time for a replacement. If you bought a Japanese used car, make sure you ask for the manual so you can also determine the proper air pressure for your tires. Keep in mind that the recommended amount varies depending on the manufacturer.

battery

4. Battery

Imagine how frustrating it would be if your battery died while you’re driving in the middle of nowhere. The car battery is one of the most neglected parts of a vehicle, especially since there are no warning signs that tell you it’s about to die on you.

If you are using your vehicle in a highly urban area, then it would be easy to call for roadside assistance when your battery dies. On the other hand, if you are planning to use your vehicle on a long drive, it would be best to ask an expert to test your battery. If you start to notice malfunctioning electrical components, if it takes a bit longer to start the engine or if you see the battery light on the dashboard blinking, then it is time to see a professional technician.

dashboard

5. Dashboard Instruments

Most car owners always pay attention to their fuel gauge and speedometer, but other instruments on the dashboard are as important. For instance, the tachometer allows you to know about the condition of your engine. You can identify common problems like oil leaks when you look at the oil pressure gauge. By paying attention to other dashboard instruments, you can avoid bigger engine problems down the road.

There are more car components that need regular check-ups. It would be advisable to check your car manual to see manufacturer recommendations.

  2. I recently bought a car that was 19 years old with about 135000 km. I think it was quite low milage considering the age, but I found out there were many items that needed attention if I wanted the car to run smoothly and sustain its life for many more years of enjoyable driving. Most of the work involved electronic sensors. Most of them need changing or at least cleaning. The fuel injectors also need inspecting and cleaning. The timing belt had never been changed and some of the belts were worn and cracked, so I recently changed them. It was a big job, but I was successful. Also shocks wear out and can produce a rough drive if they lose their springiness, so it is true that the five you mentioned are most important, but there are many other items that must be taken care of after the warranty of a car expires.
